Laser Treatments

UltraPulse® C02 Laser Skin Resurfacing

The UltraPulse laser, gently removes surface imperfections, including age spots and precancerous lesions, and tightens skin to dramatically reduce lines and wrinkles. It also stimulates new collagen growth in the dermis, effectively restructuring and restoring skin to a healthy state that closely resembles non-sun-damaged skin. Your skin looks younger, fresher, and firmer.

The UltraPulse laser uses a very high energy beam of light to vaporize scars, lines, wrinkles, and other skin defects layer by layer. Laser light penetrates to a very precise, controlled depth, making the procedure safer and more predictable than treatments such as dermabrasion and chemical peels, and reducing the risk of scarring or uneven pigmentation that may be found with these other treatments.

The procedure involves no incisions and is performed in the doctor’s office without the costs and risks of hospitalization or general anesthesia. Patients are soon able to resume normal activities.

In the first few days after the procedure, your skin will weep as new tissue and collagen are formed by the dermal layer. It will then go through a period of crusting for a few days. When the crusting is gone, the fresh new skin will be reddish-pink (called erythema), which usually fades in 4-12 weeks. (Erythema is a sign that you’re healing. Blood is actively nourishing the growth of your new skin cells.) The pinkness is easily camouflaged by make-up, which usually may be applied in 7-10 days, depending on the depth of the treatment and your skin’s response to the procedure.

Laser Hair Removal

At Dr. Novatt’s we use the Candela GentaLase Laser for our treatments, which is safe and effective for all skin types. Every client receives a consultation and evaluation by our clinicians to customize each treatment course. Our state-of-the-art laser produces a highly focused beam of light that is absorbed by dark pigment in the hair follicle. Laser energy is converted to heat and destroys the follicle, impeding its ability to generate a new hair. Since many hair follicles can be treated at once, laser hair removal treatments are appropriate for large areas such as the legs, thighs, and back.

Many people compare the sensation to the snap of a rubber band. Most patients report that any discomfort experienced is tolerable, and well worth the great results they achieve. For more sensitive patients, anesthetic creams can be applied prior to the Permanent Laser hair removal treatment. Expect to resume your normal activities after your treatments.

Permanent Laser hair removal treatment is most effective when treating hairs in the active growth phase as opposed to the dormant phase of the hair growth cycle. Since hair follicles cycle through "active" and "dormant" phases, it will be necessary to have multiple laser treatments over a period of several months. Usually, we recommend between 3-5 treatments for best results per area. Some areas of the body may require fewer sessions. Periodic scheduled services allow us to effectively treat all new hair growth as it comes to the surface of your skin, ensuring a favorable result. For best results it is important to avoid waxing or tweezing for 3-4 weeks and sun tanning for two weeks prior to your treatment. It's a good idea to shave the area being treated the day before your appointment.

IPL PhotoFacial Skin Rejuvenation

IPL PhotoFacial Skin Rejuvenation is a non-invasive treatment that uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to erase the signs of aging from the face, neck, chest, and hands.

At Dr. Novatt’s we use the Palomar Starlux Pulsed Light and Laser System, we have the specific capacity to treat many signs of aging skin on your entire face and body. Among these are fine lines, red blemishes, broken blood vessels, pigment discoloration such as freckles and age spots, enlarged pores, coarse or rough skin, loss of skin tone and elasticity, and general sun damage. The result is a youthful, smooth and revitalized facial appearance. IPL can also treat spots, discolored areas and other tell-tale signs of aging on your hands, chest and neck.

During your Photo Facial Laser Skin Treatments, a glass IPL hand piece gently pulses light onto the area of the skin being treated. Treating a pigmented lesion with the pulsed light results in heating the melanin. The damaged lesion is then naturally sloughed as the skin exfoliates.

After treatment, vascular lesions constrict and fade from view, while pigmented lesions darken and crust, and are naturally sloughed from the skin within a couple of weeks IPL Photo Facials are generally administered in a series of 4-6 treatments given every 3-4 weeks.

IPL is gentle, non-invasive and safe. Because of this, there is no "down time." You will see results in the complexion and the skin texture of the entire face. You can return to your normal routine and activities immediately. Following your Photofacial, you may experience some flushing and bruising. When that subsides, your skin will be soft, smooth, and younger looking. Additionally, treatments are individualized to your specific skin type and tone, which provides the best possible results.

Vbeam® Laser

TTreatment for Treating Unsightly Veins and Skin Blemishes, Facial veins, scars, birthmarks, rosacea, and certain red bumps can all be treated with Vbeam® at Dr. Novatt’s we use the Candela V-Beam Perfecta this provides laser treatments with excellent results and no damage to the surrounding skin. While the treatment's benefits can often be seen after one short office visit, two to four treatments are often necessary to produce the best results.

There may be a sensation of warmth in the area after the Vbeam® treatment, much like a slight sunburn would produce. There may also be slight swelling that lasts no more than a few days, or slight bruising or redness that goes away within a week. Those with darker skin tones may occasionally have color changes in their skin, and in less than one percent of all the cases, slight scarring may result.

Tattoo Removal

Dr. Gary Novatt utilizes the Medlite Q-Switched C6 laser system which is generally considered the gold standard laser for tattoo removal and pigmented lesions. It emits two wavelengths of laser light to achieve lightening of the chosen tattoo or lesion. The advent of Q-Switched lasers has permitted the removal of most tattoo inks with a very low risk of scarring. The Medlite can significantly lighten or remove a wide variety of tattoo inks and pigmented lesions. Dark blue, black and red inks will resolve the best. Oranges and purples usually fade as well. Green and yellow inks are the most difficult to remove, and additional treatments are needed to produce significant fading.

The number of treatments depends on the amount and type of ink used, and also the depth of the ink in the skin. However most patients require between 8 to 12 treatments for adequate results. Dr. Novatt is the only physician in Santa Barbara to perform tattoo removal.
